OJS – Publish Open Access Journals
OJS Service: We support editorial boards with a close relationship to the University of Vienna with publishing Diamond OA journals by providing the Open Journal Systems (OJS) journal management software. OJS covers all areas from article submission over peer review up until publication on the journal website.
Advice for editors: We provide advice in all aspects of Open Access publishing for editorial boards (even if you are not using OJS). We support you with aligning your journal towards current OA standards and fulfilling the DOAS (Diamond Open Access Standard) and DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals) criteria.

FAQs concerning OJS
The Open Access Office supports you with running your journal while the Computer Centre provides secure hosting.
The service includes:
- Hosting your journal on the University OJS platform. If required you can also use your own domain, i.e. <myjournal>.univie.ac.at or <myjournal>.<domain>
- Configuration support for your journal alongside support for all questions concerning OJS usage
- First level support by phone and email
- Support with metadata quality assurance and DOAJ criteria fulfillment
- Visibility through indexing in various databases via interface usage
Not included are: journal & article layout, marketing, and editorial tasks (editorial decisions, finding reviewers, user administration, etc.).
The OJS service is available exclusively to journals that charge neither authors nor readers (Diamond OA). A close relationship to the University of Vienna is required. I.e. an organisational unit and/or employees of the University are acting as journal editors.
OJS provides:
- Editorial and publishing system: OJS covers all areas from article submission over peer review up until publication on the journal website. It offers both a complete editorial system (backend) and publishing system (frontend).
- Role-based workflow: OJS users can have different roles such as editor, reviewer, author or reader. Depending on the role users have different options available to them in order to carry out their respective tasks (e.g. submission of an article for authors).
- Customisable web presence: The layout of your journal can be customised according to your preferences.
- Documentation: OJS is very well documented and has a large user community (see additional information on the bottom).
You can see OJS in action by attending an introductory workshop (requestable via ojs.ub(at)univie.ac.at). A → u:rise webinar takes place once a semester.
