Open Access Funding Schemes
To support University affiliates with Open Access publishing in scholarly journals, the University of Vienna has negotiated Open Access publishing agreements with 29 publishers. Articles not covered by these agreements can be supported via funding appication. University affiliates can publish Open Access in about 30,000 journals in total.
Use our Journal Eligibility Check to find out if Open Access publishing in your desired journal can be supported by the University of Vienna.

FAQs concerning Open Access funding
Open Access funding is available for journals covered by an OA publishing agreement as well as fully OA journals listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Use our Journal Eligibility Check to find out if Open Access publishing in your desired journal is supported (this also applies to articles resulting from FWF projects).
There is no central funding available for Open Access books or Open Access edited volumes. Funding is possible via the FWF programme for → Book Publications.
Open Access funding for individual contributions in edited volumes is only available for publications resulting from FWF projects provided that the entire volume is published Open Access, see OA funding application FWF.
- University affiliates as per → UG 2002 §94 are eligible for funding. Please note that "Research Fellows" are not affiliated as per UG 2002 and therefore not eligible for funding.
- Relevant date: To be eligible for funding you have to be a University affiliate on the relevant date. The relevant date for funding applications is the application date, but for OA publishing agreements this is the submission date, the acceptance date, or either. Please refer to the journal details available via our Journal Eligibility Check.
- Corresponding author principle: Only "corresponding authors" are eligible for funding. "Corresponding author" is the person the publisher is in contact with concerning the article and who is named as such in the publication itself. Co-authors, first authors or last authors are not eligible for funding unless they are also corresponding authors. Please note that in some agreements, only the "submitting corresponding author" is eligible for funding. For details, please refer to the respective OA publishing agreement.
The "corresponding author" principle is used internationally to determine which institution covers the charges in case an article is written by authors of different institutional backgrounds. It facilitates fair distribution of costs.
Use our Journal Eligibility Check to determine if an application is required.
Publishers usually offer authors a choice of several Creative Commons licences for their Open Access articles. We recommend the CC BY licence (→ CC BY 4.0 terms), which ensures that your article can be disseminated as widely and as easily as possible and which is the de facto standard for scholarly publishing. Please note that some funders (such as the FWF) mandate the CC BY licence!
More information: → Why CC BY is the Best Choice for Open Access Publishing
Open Access funding for peer reviewed publications by University affiliates resulting from FWF projects is handled directly by the Open Access Office.

Funding is only possible in the context of specific OA publishing agreements. Please refer to the journal details available via our Journal Eligibility Check.
In all other cases Open Access funding for articles resulting from EU funding is not possible as a matter of principle. This means that as soon as the EU is named in the funding or acknowledgements section of the article, no funding is available, regardless of whether the corresponding author or a co-author was involved in the project.
