Open Access publishing agreement: Frontiers

Authors affiliated with the University of Vienna can publish Open Access in Frontiers Open Access journals under a publishing agreement. Payment for the discounted APCs is provided by the central Open Access publishing fund. Please find the agreement details here:

Funding requirements
  • The "corresponding author" of the article is affiliated1) with the University of Vienna on the date of submission.
  • The "corresponding author" states "University of Vienna" as their affiliation or as one of their affiliations in the article.
  • Book reviews are always excluded from funding.
  • A maximum of three Frontiers publications per author per calendar year can be funded.
  • The following applies to articles resulting from FWF projects: funding provided by the FWF2).
  • The following applies to articles resulting from EU projects: funding provided by the EU3).
Invoicing
Invoicing with agreement discount addressed to the Open Access Office. OA costs are fully covered and paid for.
Author workflow
During submission, "University of Vienna" has to be selected as funding institution (Note: For publications resulting from FWF projects, the FWF has to be selected!). The affiliation of the "corresponding author" to the University of Vienna will be checked by the Open Access Office.

1) University affiliates are defined in UG 2002 §94. Should you be a research grant holder please provide confirmation to that effect via e-mail.

2) If the FWF is named as a funder in the article it is responsible for Open Access funding (regardless of whether the corresponding author was involved in the project). There is a dedicated Open Access agreement between Frontiers and the FWF, so there is no need to apply for reimbursement. Please note that the FWF funding requirements have to be met.

3) If the EU is named as a funder in the article it is responsible for Open Access funding (regardless of whether the corresponding author was involved in the project). Please note that the funding requirements in your EU grant agreement have to be met (see also OA funding for EU projects).
