Rethinking Academia: The scientific publishing system and the strive for open accessibility

08.04.2019

University of Vienna, April 29th 2019

"The publishing system plays a fundamental role in science, inasmuch as scientific findings are proclaimed and evaluated through scholarly journals. Yet, the scientific publishing system is engaged in multiple controversies: the problem of open accessibility, the justification of retaining the authority to evaluate the relevance of scientific work, and the lucrative aspect of private publishers are only some of them.

With this public debate, we wish to facilitate stimulating discussions on the current working machinery of the publishing system, in order to incentivize an active participation in the controversy of whether the publishing system shall be revised in the light of the different level of accessibility that the use of internet enables."
